Eligible applicants must be an educator at a public school, employed full-time by the school district, and work directly with the students for at minimum 75% of the time
When the teacher creates their account on DonorsChoose.org they will fill out the details of their work schedule and/or contract. This is based on an "honor system" that is later verified with the school after the project has been funded.
Eligibility is based on APPLICATION DATE. As long as the application was taken between 5/1-8/31, the program benefits will be honored.
Librarians, guidance counselors, school nurses, and coaches who are also full time teachers are eligible for this program as long as they meet the eligibility requirements. Principals, administrators, PTA members, teachers' assistants, paraprofessionals, student teachers, substitutes, part-time teachers, after-school teachers, or staff developers are not eligible for this program.
Unfortunately no, because our non-profit partner, DonorsChoose.org, is administering the gift codes for this program and they only allow public school teachers to participate, this program will do the same. Educators at non-profit, private, or parochial schools are also not eligible, even if the private program partners or contracts with a local school district
They will need to register on the website DonorsChoose.org and create a project. Within 2 weeks after the loan is funded, a representative from Service First Mortgage will email the teacher a $500 gift code to use on DonorsChoose.org. The teacher can then donate their gift code towards funding their project(s), and/or projects of their colleagues. Once the project is completely funded, DonorsChoose.org works with a variety of vendors to fulfill the requested supplies. No monies are ever physically delivered to the teacher in the form of cash or a check.
The remainder of the money can be pledged to a different project; either theirs or another teacher’s.
